What does Oppo think about the Neon ACR Coupe?
It doesn’t matter to me one way or another, it’s mostly curiosity to see whether time changes perspective

My bro-in-law ran one of those for a couple years out near Detroit. I remember something about oiling problems in the corners.

i remember when those neons were EVERYWHERE. you couldnt swing a dead cat without hitting one. glad theyre gone, what with the poor styling(start of the shapeless jellybean), peeling paint, fitment issues and bad water pumps, and blown headgaskets. parts interchange with caravans, and kcars, and ptcruisers. a roach among dodges. and cheap. you could pick 3 up for less than a thousand. sometimes all in the same yard.
i cant remember the last time i seen one moving. good riddance.
i miss them already.

Oh damn this is cool. I’d want one if I didn’t absolutely hate Chrysler.

I knew a guy in the army that had one. Don’t remember the year, but he had it around 98 or 99. It was a very impressive car at the time. I thought it was superior to the same year Civic Si.

I remember seeing a couple at some autocrosses back in the 00s. They were pretty quick for what they were. Seemed like a good low cost autocross car. No idea about reliability or longevity but I suspect it was poor just based on it being a 90s Chrysler product.

SCCA member chiming in; these things were the kings of affordable SCCA club racing, along with original Sentra SE-R and GM’s SCCA-special FWD cars, well before the Miata’s popularity took off. A local member picked up a decent first-gen Neon R/T (basically an ACR minus the stripped interior) and that thing KICKS ASS at autocross with a fresh set of shocks and tires.

I always liked the original Neon, it was a cute, and surprisingly capable car for it’s time. They weren’t too bad, reliability-wise either. I still see a few from time to time, but sadly, most are gone around here due to salty winter rust and being bought and worn out by high school kids...
I actually have a ‘95 Neon brochure on the shelf in front of me by some random coincidence!
